Awaken Online: Happy is the twelfth instalment (based on publication order) in the epic LitRPG saga written by Travis Bagwell that revolves around a fictional Virtual Reality MMORPG named Awaken Online. It is the fourth side quest, and introduces us to a new and exiting character, Dom, a.k.a Smiley. And we finally get to meet the Earth God!

It’s been a long time coming but we finally meet a new Avatar! Or is it actually a “non-avatar”? It’s hard to explain, but unlike the other gods, the God of Air—also known as the God of Happiness—breaks the tradition and rather than recruiting an avatar, he empowers a few select characters with unique gifts, working alongside them in what you could call a win-win transaction. But you’ve got to read the book to understand it!
We also get to see a new jungle like area of Awaken Online, and a new starter city called Aislen, which is considered the worst starting location in all of Awaken Online. Both of these had not been mentioned before in any of the other books, and are located way south of the Twilight Throne.
Along our new avatar we meet quite a few new characters, some of which we’ve come across before, that join forces creating a guild called Death or Taxes. And unsurprisingly… Some of them share a hate for Finn, Jason, or both.
All these new characters obviously also come with new and amazing abilities, some of which are somewhat hard to understand at the beginning (even for the character itself!) but add a lot of fun and make fights way more interesting.
What’s it about? – Official Synopsis
Pain. Chaos. Happiness?
Dominic Hart was screwed.
Diagnosed with terminal cancer, no money for treatment, and an athletic scholarship hanging by a thread… he didn’t have many options. But the university clinic had offered him a free videogame. Some sort of “therapy,” they said. A way to while away the hours until he kicked the bucket. Yay.
What Dom wasn’t expecting was to get swindled by a surly casino owner right out of the gate. Or get dropped in a backwater hellhole voted the “#1 worst starting location in Awaken Online.” That might have been because a videogame mafia controlled the city. Or maybe it was because even the plant life could kill you. Regardless, his shit luck had obviously tagged along for the ride.
But that’s life. The odds are stacked in the house’s favor, you’re running out of chips, and you have to decide to hit or fold. For Dom, he decided to go all in. What did he really have to lose?
It’s just his life and happiness hanging in the balance.
My opinion of Awaken Online: Happy
Overall? I liked it! We finally get to know the God of Air, or God of Happiness, and we meet his “non-avatar”, of whom we’ve heard rumours in previous books: Smiles. Travis Bagwell transports us into a new area of Awaken Online we haven’t seen or heard of before, which is widely hated by new players for being considered the hardest starting location in all of Awaken Online.
Like those of other main characters, Dom’s real-world story is not-so-happy: he learns that he has only months to live and is offered a final escape through a special medical program that grants him access to Awaken Online—and with nothing left to lose, he logs in. Dom sets himself apart from previous protagonists with his harsh, unorthodox play style—both brutal and refreshing. Leveraging the game’s time compression and his Deathwish ability, which drastically reduces his respawn time, he accelerates his growth through endless repetition of extreme physical conditioning, resistance drills, and “torture training,” all fueled by a deliberate cycle of suicides. His unique skill, Chaotic Blessing, replaces his mana pool with a luck modifier and introduces luck inversion. Initially very confusing (even to him), it becomes one of the story’s most interesting ideas as good and bad fortune constantly switch places. Since he can’t cast spells, Dom focuses on physical growth, pouring points into Vitality, Strength, Dexterity, and Endurance, becoming an almost unstoppable tank.
The other characters we meet, and who join Dom, all have some crazy unique powers we have not really seen before, although we’ve actually met three of them before! We’ve got Adrian, a failed bard ignored by everyone else until he meets Dom. Vanessa, an ice mage that was abandoned in the Abyss after Lahab’s collapse, hates Finn and anyone tied to that betrayal. Walt, an earth mage who escaped the same disaster and has the power to control gravity and matter. Lauren, a lightning-wielding fighter and former guild leader who was executed by Jason during the Haven massacre. And Willow, an older fire mage with overwhelming destructive power.
Oh, and then there’s the Battle Chicken called Wingman. Yes, a Chicken, one of the strangest and most fun elements of the book. It drains 10% of Dom’s stats and in exchange he gets a pet that just keeps growing. It feels kind of ridiculous at first, but fits the novel’s tone perfectly: it eats everything, grows at an alarming rate, and is hunted relentlessly by other creatures.
But not everything can be fun and perfect. Although following Dom on his grueling training is entertaining, this alone takes up roughly the first 35% of the book and feels slightly excessive. After this, the story really becomes interesting.
And I don’t understand how it has taken 12 books to ever hear about this new area and Aislen. Dom is not the first player to start here. There are thousands of players who start in this city and play in this area. The Jackals have hundreds and hundreds of members, and supposedly this area is widely hated, but not once is there a mention about it in any of the previous books, even when Jason and his friends scan and read the Awaken Online forums and videos online. It’s just one small thing that doesn’t make sense to me.
As I mentioned above, the luck inversion skill ultimately becomes fascinating, but is just very confusing at the beginning. I’m sure Travis knew this, which is why even Dom is confused when he gets it.
As is usual in Awaken Online, there’s a clear power imbalance between Dom and his allies and the rest of players, due to their ability to farm stats through intentional death. This is especially noticeable near the end, and removes some of the excitement for the grand final battle, because we already know it’s going to be too easy. That said, I do find it funny that Travis introduces such a universally hated game mechanic as spawn-camping. If you’re a gamer, you’ll surely agree!
While other Avatars clearly gain advantage through their connection with their gods, Dom, who is not really an Avatar, is greatly influenced by The Gambler (the God of Air) and gains certain perks, the most important being gaining access to “The Casino” when he dies. Instead of being forced to relive his deaths in helpless stasis, Dom awakens here fully conscious, able to move, observe, and reflect. And not only that, he gets his allies access to this Casino too, which gives them another big advantage over other players.
I do like that Dom, like other main characters in Awaken Online, interacts and becomes allies with NPCs, treating them like living and intelligent beings, while other players disregarded them as mere cannon fodder for experience only. And isn’t it great to read a book where the main character and his allies also die? When you think about Jason or Finn, they barely ever die! One of my main problems with them! It’s refreshing to have a character who dies, and actually benefits from it.
Outside of the actual story, I’ve also noticed some grammar and minor writing mistakes. They’re small, but noticeable enough to break immersion.
In summary, I enjoyed Happy! It’s innovative, refreshing, and introduces some long awaited characters with some badass powers. And it’s going to be very interesting to see how they fare against Jason and Finn. So yes, recommended for sure!
