Awaken Online: Crucible is the fifteenth instalment (based on publication order) in the epic LitRPG saga written by Travis Bagwell that revolves around a fictional Virtual Reality MMORPG named Awaken Online.

And we're back again with our favourite necromancer and his shiny sidekick, or as Jason likes to call the duo: “Team Midnight Sparkle”. Two mortal enemies joined together by a common goal: deal with the aftermath of the transformed game world, find a way to help the struggling stranded players and deal with the ancient “Original” Avatars.
At the risk of sounding repetitive, just like with the previous novels, Armageddon and Timeless, a lot happens in Crucible. And I mean A LOT.
We’ve got mysterious relics, one for each of our avatars. We’ve got millions of players either unhappy about being used as slaves by the Original Avatars or crammed into Pax. We’ve got a new dungeon and we’ve got a massive war between two factions that’s getting closer and closer.
At the same time, we’ve got some uncanny alliances, a massive tournament that feels more like a round-by-round massacre and, as with every Awaken Online novel, some crazy new evolutions and abilities!
And then there’s the clones (you’ll see!) and all the events that happen outside of Awaken Online!
And yet again, our villain and protagonist sits right in the middle of everything, becomes a dungeon boss and seems to just play his own game.
Awaken Online: Crucible - My Opinion
Overall, I really liked Awaken Online: Crucible. But honestly, it did feel a bit long. At 823 pages, it's the longest book in the series so far, overtaking Dominion by 22 pages. That's not a massive difference compared to the other books, but somehow this one just felt longer.
I really liked seeing Jason and Alex work together for once, and getting to dig a bit into Alex’s past. I also loved the new dungeon and getting back some of those classic RPG elements! Although I’m not sure how balanced or… “bugged?” that dungeon really is.
Related to that, I also found Jason's new Body Surfing skill really interesting, with amazing possibilities! But once again, Jason gains an incredible skill that no one else has ever discovered. Which brings me back to something I’ve mentioned in a few other Awaken Online reviews: Jason just seems to be too favoured. And this time, he actually admits (TWICE!) that his schemes always work out!
There’s even a moment in the book where Alfred himself thinks Jason is exploiting the game and mentions an “imminent patch”. By the end of Crucible, the whole book kinda feels too premeditated, as if EVERYTHING has been going according to Jason’s plan all along.
I did really like the way Dominic (Smiles) explains that power isn’t entirely related to race, class or stats. It’s about creativity. Anyone can come up with new skills, new powers with enough creativity, ingenuity and discipline.
But then again, characters like Jason and Finn just keep pushing things further than anyone else. They're constantly evolving and discovering things that nobody else seems capable of. And this time, I think even Finn goes a little too far... I mean, he literally uses his Mana Sight to look through his skin, muscles and bones, all the way down to SEEING electrons AND controlling their movement!
The “streamer influencers” were a nice touch and felt like a bit of a dig at the thousands of pretty brain-rotten streamers roaming YouTube, Twitch and Kick nowadays. I also liked some of the funny references to Dark Souls and The Office that Travis included.
But I also missed a few things. Riley and Frank, for example, appear relatively briefly and don’t have any major impact, and I do miss the team dynamic Jason and his friends had in previous novels, especially towards the beginning of the series. I also miss seeing more of the RPG elements, like players progressing, levelling up and choosing their skills. I feel like we used to get a lot more of that at the beginning, whereas now we often only get it after the characters have levelled up several times. Although I haven’t counted how many times this happens, and I might be wrong here.
As I mentioned earlier, a ton of things happen, and they happen in many different places. “Everything, everywhere all at once” comes to my mind when trying to describe it. It’s great because you don’t get bored, but it’s also a lot.
At this point, the Awaken Online series kind of reminds me of The Fast and the Furious. Just like the movie series, it started with a great idea, but each new entry keeps adding more stuff, getting crazier and more disproportionate, to the point where it feels like it's starting to lose its way. And Alex's mention of Family near the end also made me think about this 🤣:
“Time. Money. Work. Family. It's that tantalizing possibility that draws us all into that world.”
In conclusion, despite some of my reservations, I really liked Awaken Online: Crucible. It’s still very entertaining and a strong entry in the series, and if you're a fan of the series and have read the previous books, I'd definitely recommend picking this one up too!
